How Transfers Work in an Online Career League
How Transfers Work in an Online Career League
The transfer market is what separates an online career league from just playing matches. Here's exactly how transfers work — and how to build a stronger squad by dealing with real managers.
In single-player Career Mode, transfers mean haggling with the AI. In an online career mode league, every deal is with another real person — which makes the market smarter, more competitive, and a lot more fun. Here's how it all works.
The big difference: you deal with real people
There's no AI to exploit here. Every player you want belongs to another manager who has their own plans, rivalries and squad needs. That means transfers become genuine negotiations — you're reading people, not sliders. A deal only happens when both managers agree it's worth doing, which makes a good piece of business feel earned.
The main ways to move players
Most leagues give you a few routes to reshape your squad:
1. Player swaps
The bread and butter. You propose a swap to another manager — your player (or players) for theirs. Both sides have to agree, an admin approves the deal, and then you make the change in EA FC using Edit Team so your in-game squad matches the official one. Swaps are how you fix a weak position by trading from a strong one.
2. Free agents
Players not currently on any club's books can often be signed as free agents, giving you a way to add depth without giving anything up — usually subject to league rules on how many you can grab and when.
3. Tokens and recruitment drives
Many leagues use a token currency, earned by playing and winning. You spend tokens on things like a Recruitment Drive — a chance to bring in new talent — or to enter auctions for sought-after players. Tokens reward the managers who show up and perform, keeping the market tied to activity rather than luck. Auctions get their own breakdown in how auctions work in an online career league.
How a deal actually goes through
- Agree the deal with the other manager (usually chatted out on Discord).
- Submit it on the league website.
- Admin approves it — this keeps everything fair and recorded.
- Make the move in EA FC with Edit Team so your playable squad matches your official one.
That last step matters: the website is the source of truth, but your in-game team has to mirror it for fixtures to be fair.
Rules that keep the market fair
- Approval on every deal stops dodgy or lopsided trades slipping through.
- Squad limits prevent one manager hoarding a superteam.
- Original release-day ratings are often locked in, so a mid-season upgrade can't warp values.
- Activity-based tokens mean the market rewards playing, not spending real money.
Tips for winning the transfer market
- Trade from strength. Your deepest position is your currency — sell surplus to fix gaps.
- Build relationships. In a league of real people, a manager you've dealt fairly with before is more likely to deal again.
- Don't hoard tokens. A well-timed recruitment drive mid-season can swing your campaign more than sitting on currency.
- Plan around the reset. Squads reset each season, so weigh short-term wins against the long game.
